Canada’s beer border battle continues . . .

It's been three years since we brewed our Gerard Comeau Brut IPA, which brought attention to the interprovincial trade barriers that continue to bedevil the beer industry, and many other industries in Canada. We continue to push for such barriers to be taken down so inter-provincial trade can flourish, though, unfortunately, not much has changed.John Ivison of The National Post has written about the situation as it stands today, and he spoke with owner Dave. Click here to read Ivison's take on why the pandemic makes the removal of provincial trade barriers even more urgent . ....

We’re open, and we have lots of health-safety measures in place!

Now that we're open again we're taking all sorts of precautions to keep you, and us, healthy! We're at very limited capacity (though we do have our Flora Out Front pop up patio for the next few Saturdays), so tables are spaced for social distancing. We're wearing masks and you are required to wear one too. (Let's pretend we all look good in them!) We have plenty of sanitizer on hand, and we're cleaning constantly. We hope to see you soon! Here are some guidelines to help everyone enjoy themselves and stay healthy . . .Welcome back to Flora Hall! We are very happy to see you and grateful...

We’re excited about reopening!

Our Campaign for Park Beers gains steam

Owner Dave was on CBC's All In A Day to talk to host Alan Neal about beer in parks. Why can't Canadians drink in parks, an enjoyable pastime that is permitted in so many other countries? If the City of Ottawa were to get behind pop up beer sales in city parks it could make a huge difference for the majority of breweries and restaurants that do not have patios and are struggling to survive the COVID shutdown.Click here to read the CBC story about the Campaign for Park Beers, and listen to Dave's conversation with Alan. If you support the idea, let your city councillor...

Helping the neighbours!

Our owner Dave recently popped across the street to the Centretown Emergency Food Centre to hand over a starting donation of $2,500 from Flora Hall Brewing. The food centre’s Allison Dingle welcomed the cheque from Dave, from a safe six feet away.Flora Hall has food for takeout and delivery during the shutdown and is donating five per cent of all food sales to the food centre. Dave intends to maintain a relationship with the food centre once this public health shutdown is over and we can get back to (the new) normal. The food centre is in critical need of donations during the shutdown. Temporary closure of bar & kitchen, retail shop remains open

FRIENDS: The Ottawa Public Health folks have now recommended that Ottawans, to the extent possible, stay home. Though officials have as yet stopped short of mandating closure of bars and restaurants, it would be irresponsible to remain open, so we’ve decided to pause the Flora tap room/restaurant operation for two weeks, to mirror school closures that are in place. It is the right and responsible thing to do.We will keep our retail store open, for those who crave a Flora brew while binging on Netflix or otherwise passing these trying times at home. We’ll look at options for home delivery...

About the whale that swims over our bar

We get questions about the whale that hangs over our bar. What's it all about? Watch the short video below to see Ottawa artist Christopher Griffin explain how the artwork is a passionate statement about human cruelty and negligence toward whales. Then come in and grab a seat at the bar, order a pint and enjoy this original, local art!
